The trick is a URL hack that has been passed around for well over a decade. You open a video such as youtube.com/watch?v=abc123, click into the address bar, add the letters ss right before youtube so it reads ssyoutube.com/watch?v=abc123, and press Enter. The domain ssyoutube.com belongs to SaveFrom.net and simply forwards the video ID to their downloader. Variants such as sssyoutube, ssyoutube rip or ssyoutube online are either typos or unrelated copycat sites that borrowed the name because so many people search for it.
Because the shortcut lives in muscle memory, people still type it every day. The problem is what happens after Enter.
Why SSYouTube Does Not Work in the United States
SaveFrom.net announced on April 16, 2020 that, because of what it called "strenuous attacks by certain US copyright holders", it would terminate its US service on April 28, 2020, and the letter is still what US visitors see today. According to the RIAA, ssyoutube.com "appears to be the latest iteration of Savefrom.net", and it posted its own discontinuation letter with an effective date of November 3, 2022. Open the shortcut from a US IP address and you land on that letter. The redirect itself still fires, which is why the address bar changes, but there is no download button at the end of it. The US Trade Representative's Notorious Markets review has listed SaveFrom since its 2023 edition and notes the service reportedly also pulled out of the United Kingdom and Spain.
Three other things changed around the same time and make the old routine even less pleasant:
- The browser helper keeps disappearing from official stores. The SaveFrom.net Helper extension has repeatedly been unavailable from the Chrome Web Store, and SaveFrom's own support forum documents sideloading workarounds. Malwarebytes classifies the ad-serving extensions under the name Adware.SaveFrom.
- Copycat domains fill the gap. Search for ssyoutube from the US and many of the results are look-alike sites that borrowed the name. They are not SaveFrom, and they commonly carry heavy pop-up advertising or ask for notification permission.
- YouTube changes its player often. Sites that depend on an old extractor can break after each change until the extractor is updated, and a tool that is not maintained for one country tends to stay broken there.
